Why organic?
Essentially we farm organically because we believe that it is better for the environment, for the soil and for us. We began to convert the farms in 1999 and immediately saw a vast change in biodiversity and simply the way the farm looked. We have a simple traditional rotation of clover grass, oats, beans, oats and back to grass. Having plastered the fields with artificial nitrogen fertilizer in the past, we now rely on the beneficial effects of clover root microbes fixing nitrogen in the soil. Clover grows really well in Lancashire and has kept the fields green even in the driest summer as their roots penetrate deep underground. The cattle graze this clover and we also make silage, and this is all the cattle eat – grass. We are governed by Organic farmers and Growers and all aspects of our farm and retail enterprise are inspected annually. We use no artificial chemicals on the farm any more. It Tastes Better! Organic fruit and vegetables also grow at their own pace and have a lower water content – as a result, their natural flavour is not diluted. |
